Sergio Viscoli, a New Mexico native, was born in Santa Fe and currently resides in Albuquerque. Although a lifelong photographer and painter (he sold his first work at the age of six), he began pastel painting in the early90s while living in Clovis, New Mexico and working as an attorney. There he studied under Bruce DeFoor, an avid plein air painter, and chair of the Art Department at the Clovis Community College. Upon moving to Albuquerque, Sergio studied art and print making at the University of New Mexico. He has also taken workshops with many artists, including Albert Handell, Doug Dawson, Deborah Secor, Desmond O’Hagan and Richard McKinley.
Sergio has had one person shows at Patrician Design Gallery, the Peanut Gallery and at banks and restaurants in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque area. He has participated in numerous group shows including the Pastel Society of New Mexico National Exhibitions, the Pastel Society of America, and Masterworks of New Mexico. He has won several awards and many of his paintings have been sold to individuals and businesses.
Sergio loves painting nighttime cityscapes. His interest is drawn to the abstract shapes and colorful patterns that are found in windows, or reflected on cars or rain slick streets. Sergio especially tries to include as many different colors in his paintings while maintaining harmony by using most of the same colors throughout the painting. Sergio also loves the challenge of combining the last light at the end of the day with the lights from street lamps. Many people say that Sergio’s work reminds them of Edward Hopper.
